GALENA, Ill. -- Fred L. Alvis, of Galena, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010.


A Masonic service will be at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena, where military rites will be accorded. Burial will be held at a later date. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Cremation rites have been accorded.


He was born in Princeton, Ind., son of Jerauld and Opal (Moffett) Alvis. He lived in Princeton until Jan. 16, 1947, when he enlisted in the Army and was honorably discharged on June 18, 1948. After his discharge he attended Butler College.


Fred spent most of his life in the hotel and resort business. He was the general manager at the New INN and Brooks Golf Course, of Okoboji, Iowa. He was director of operations at Adventureland, in Des Moines, then manager at Chestnut Mountain Resort in Galena.


Surviving are his wife, Joanne (Welter); a sister, JoAnn Boyer; and many nieces and nephews.
