Harry J. Alvis, Former Teacher Here, Dies At 89

Word has been received here of the death of Harry Joshua Alvis, a teacher in Mt. Vernon many years ago. Mr. Alvis died October 20 at Charleston, South Carolina, at the age of 89 years, 11 months and 16 days. He had been residing since August at the home of his son, Captain Harry J. Alvis, a captain in the Navy medical corps.

Services were held October 23 and burial was in Mt. Hope cemetery at Belleville.

Mr. Alvis taught school in Mt. Vernon and in Nashville before taking a teaching position in East St. Louis in 1904. He later became principal of East St. Louis high school. For years he resided in McMinnville, Oregon, and in 1957 returned to live in the East St. Louis area. In August, when his health began to fail, he moved to South Carolina to be with his son.

Survivors include his wife, Louisa, his son, two granddaughters and six great grandchildren.
