Six deceased Aiken County residents, whose bodies have gone unclaimed or for whom funds were not available for funeral arrangements, will be laid to rest at 10 a.m. Friday during the annual pauper burial service.

Arranged by the Aiken County Coroner’s Office, the graveside services, which are open to community residents, will be at the Graniteville Cemetery on Gregg Highway in Graniteville.

“We think it’s important not only for the individual who is being interred but also to distant relatives or friends,” said Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton, who said Aiken County has sponsored the service for about 20 years. “In some cases, we were able to locate some distant family members or local family members who just did not have the resources to give the family member a proper burial.

“It closes that chapter in that family’s life and gives them an opportunity to grieve appropriately.”

The following residents will be laid to rest:
• George Gibson, born May 11, 1940
• Tony J. Lacarter, born April 9, 1947
• Robert Cowan, born April 22, 1948
• Barbara J. Acord, born April 5, 1949
• Henry Reese, born April 18, 1951
• Cynthia Ann Sullivan, born Jan. 7, 1961.

The Coroner’s Office made every effort to contact families and extended family members of the deceased; however, some could not be located. Friends and family of the deceased who could be found were notified of the service.

Carlton said the service is a community effort. The Rev. Tad Marshall, the pastor of Lakeside Baptist Church in Clearwater, will preside at the services. James Vaughn, the owner of Cannon House Florist & Gifts in Aiken, will provide the spray of flowers. Napier Funeral Home of Graniteville donated six urns and will provide the tent, chairs and their services. Hatcher Funeral Home and Cremation of Langley and Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Homes of Aiken provided cremation services. New Future Granite II prepared the headstones. Capt. Bobby Wilson and other members of the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office bagpipe band will provide music. “It’s a community effort to do the right thing for these former citizens,” Carlton said.
