Ensign Cannon fought throughout the Western Campaign, including the Atlanta Campaign. He was wounded several times in battle and received his appointment to Ensign from Col. James Moss, for his gallantry at the battle of Chickamauga. His unit surrendered at Washington, Georgia in May of 1865. Ensign Cannon settled in Licolnton, Georgia and married Miss Mary Susan Harmon.
