Bishop of Mende, Liturgical Writer. He studied law in Bologna and moved to Medena where he began teaching Canon law. In 1274, he joined Pope Gregory X for the journey to the Second Council of Lyons. There he helped draw up the constitutions of the council. He was made vice spiritual by Pope Martin IV in 1281. Then, in 1283, he was appointed governor of Romagna and the March of Ancona. He was elected Bishop of Mende in 1286, yet refused the archbishopric of Ravenna in 1295. He retired to Rome in 1296. His greatest work is Speculum iudiciale, a compilation of civil, criminal and canonical procedure, which he first produced in 1271. By 1286 he had also written Rationale divinorum officiorum, a treatise on Christian ritual which still stands as a hallmark of medieval Western liturgies.
