Roman Catholic Saint. Patron Saint of Salzburg. According to history he was born into the Frankish Royal Merovingian family. Later he was to become Bishop of Worms, a position he was forced out of by the mostly pagan populace of the area. He was soon requested to come to Bavaria by Duke Theodo of Bavaria in order to help spread the Catholic faith. He very shortly thereafter was able to convert a large area in the Pannonian lands. He eventually found himself in the old Roman ruin of Juvavum. It was here that Rupert made his base of operations. He was responsible for reforming St. Peter's Abbey, beginning the construction of Salzburg Cathedral and founding Benedictine nunnery of Nonnberg. His niece, Saint Erentrude, was to become the first Abbess of the nunnery. Tradition states that he died in Salzburg on Easter Sunday somewhere between 710 and 718. His sarcophagus was unearthed in 1966 and now sits with his Gothic tombstone of 1444 in St. Peter's Church.
