Physician and Educator, He is known as one of the first Black students to enroll at the University of Georgia, along with Charlayne Hunter- Gault.He was a prominent Orthopedic Surgeon, in Atlanta , until his death. The Hamilton Holmes MARTA station, the current end of the West line was renamed , in his honor, along with the street it sits on,(Hightower Road) off I-20W after his demise.

Holmes died in 1995 of heart failure in Atlanta, Georgia.
