Maria and her husband are buried on a lot owned by Jesse T Woodbury. A Maria Howell, born about 1843 in USA, NY, Niagara County (1865 New York State census), is shown living with the Woodbury family in the 1850 and 1860 US censuses, and the 1865 NYS census. The 1850 and 1860 censuses do not show relationships among household members. The 1865 census shows her as a boarder. She is not mentioned in Jesse's 13 Jun 1861 will (New York Wills and Probate Records, 1659-1999). It thus appears that, for whatever reason, Maria was raised, but not adopted, by the Woodbury family. She has not been identified in subsequent records.
Maria Anderson first appears with her husband, Jonathan or Johnathan Anderson, in the 1870 US census. The couple is shown living in USA, NY, Niagara, Wilson. They have been found in the 1870 and 1880 US censuses and the 1875 and 1892 NYS censuses. Jonathan died in 1893. The 1900 US census asked the number of years married individuals had been married. Although Maria answered 34 years, that number is crossed out, presumably because she was a widow. If she had been married 34 years, she and Jonathan were married about 1866.
Although there is circumstantial evidence indicating that Maria Anderson is the same person as the Maria Howell who was living with the Woodbury family, there is no actual proof in these records.
