David Allen was born in Virginia May 8, 1785 and died in Greene County, Indiana, Highland Township, August 28, 1850. Although extensive research has been done, no definitive record of his parentage has been found. It is our opinion that he was the son of one of the Hugh Allen's who lived in Augusta and Botetourt counties, Virginia, in the 1700s.
David first appears in the records of Tazewell County, Virginia, when he married Margaret Daily, daughter of Isaac and Margaret (Wilkinson) Daily, on February 24, 1814. He then appears in the 1820 Federal Census and on personal property tax lists of Tazewell in 1820, shown owning three horses. An older, John Allen, but hardly old enough to be his father (possibly a brother), is on the same tax list and census. This John Allen was living near David just northeast of Maiden Fork Mill in 1833. John, David and Robert Allen (a younger man who appears in the Tazewell records also) purchased from the estate of Capt. James Peery in December 1821.
David and Margaret were the parents of ten children, six sons and four daughters, all of whom were born in Tazewell County. However, in the fall of 1836, they packed up their belongings and nine unmarried children and made their trek westward to Greene County, Indiana. Here they purchased land or received a grant in Highland Township near Worthington. Many records are missing from the files at the courthouse in Bloomfield, Indiana, so it has been difficult to find early records relating to David, there. Margaret appears on the 1850 Federal Census with seven of her ten children still residing with her.
Hugh Allen, her eldest son, died in the fall of 1856. His will, dated October 24, 1856, was probated October 31, 1856 in Greene County court. Her second son, William G. and his family migrated to Wapello County, Iowa in 1854 and in 1858, Margaret, with her two youngest sons, Isaac and Oscar, made the journey to Iowa, where, by 1860, all three sons and their families appear in the Wayne County, Iowa, Federal Census, living in Warren township. Margaret was listed in the household of son, Isaac. Margaret Allen died in the fall of 1863, almost 70 years of age. Her sons were farmers in Wayne County.
Oscar G., the youngest, had a large and successful nursery business, as well as farming and raising Norman draft horses, however, he later removed from the county, and we have not found later records concerning him. Part of his family remained all their lives in Wayne County, near Allerton where William lived.
