Calvin B. Hewitt was born 22 March 1848 in Mooresville, West township, Huntington County, Pennsylvania the sixth of seven children of John and Hephziabah (later shortened to Hephzibah) Hewitt. Both parents were from Pennsylvania where they are both buried in Mooresville Cemetery, Mooresville, West township, Huntington County, Pennsylvania according to the research of Joan Irvin.

The 1880 census lists Calvin B. Hwewitt as a dentist and the business card pictured at right has him practicing with Dr. Hammond in 1872 (Find A Grave Memorial# 109804675). He obviously served a preceptorship in Dr. Hammond's office. In the early days of the dental profession this was not uncommon. It was also often the case that some of these dentists that started as preceptor educated went on to a formal dental education.

Dr. Calvin B. Hewitt did so and was an 1885 graduate of Kansas City Dental College.

Drs. Hammond and Hewitt were together for at least four yeaars. The date on the reverse of the appointment card is 1872 (in pencil) and they were at 712 Main Street. In an advertisement in the 1873 Kansas City directory they were listed at 815 Main Street and in the same directory for 1876 they were at 720 Main Street.

THE National Association of Dental Faculties held its third annual meeting in the Park Theatre, Niagara Falls, commencing Monday, August 2, 1886 - Dr. Hewitt represented the Kansas City Dental College at this meeting just one year after his graduation. His previous experience in a preceptorship and in a dental practice before attending dental school had obviously qualified him to represent the school in this manner.

Dr. Hewitt's brother B.F. "Ben" Hewitt, FAG Memorial# 25520803, according to the Kansas City Star, Aug. 14, 1896 met an untimely and unusual death: . . . an old and highly respected citizen of Olathe, died from blood poisoning produced by a spider bite. Mr. Hewitt had for almost 40 years been a traveling salesman, starting his career at age 16 representing a Kansas City wholesale grocery. His territory included southern Kansas, Oklahoma and northern Texas. Three years ago he quit the road and went into business in Olathe. He is survived by his wife and three children.
