DR. W. M. HAMMOND. Dr. William M. Hammond, 89 years old, who had lived in Kansas City and vicinity for the last forty years and practiced dentistry twenty-five years ago, died at Rosedale, April 27. He leaves a wife and one daughter. The body was cremated. American dental journal. [Vol. 4, no. 5, 1905]

Dr. Hammond was listed as early as the 1870 census as a dentist. The appointment card to the right has him in practice with Dr. Calvin B. Hewitt (Find A Grave Memorial# 109683869) in 1872. Evidence suggests that Calvin B. Hewitt served a preceptorship under Dr. Hammond before graduating from Kansas City Dental College in 1885. Dr. Hammond was an allopathic physician and dentist and was listed in the Directory of Deceased American Physicians, 1804-1929. He was also listed in Kansas City directories as a Dentist in 1881-1887 at 1307 Walnut Street and as a Physician in the 1883-1890 Kansas City directories also at 1307 Walnut Street.

Drs. Hammond and Hewitt were together for at least four yeaars. The date on the reverse of the appointment card is 1872 (in pencil) and they were at 712 Main Street. In an advertisement in the 1873 Kansas City directory they were listed at 815 Main Street and in the same directory for 1876 they were at 720 Main Street.

The Journal of the American Medical Association announced his death in Vol. 44, May 20 1905, giving details of his graduation from medical school:

William M. Hammond, M.D. University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, 1845, for 40 years a resident of Kansas City, Mo., died at his home in Rosedale, Kan., April 27, aged 89.

William M.,8 son of Benoni G. by a second marriage, is a physician at Kansas City, Mo. He attended medical and dental lectures in Cincinnati, Ohio, and is legally authorized to practice both professions. He formerly lived in northern California, and at one time was located at San Diego. During the late Civil War, he received a lieutenant's commission from Gov. Blair of Michigan, and raised a company of men. In the Summer of 1864 he went with his company to the front, and was attached to the construction corps at Chattanooga, Tenn. He m. 1st, in 1843, Almeda Henry, who d. in 1876. Issue: Francis M. and Melville C, both of whom d. in infancy. He m. 2d, May 15, 1877, Loretta Mann, a graduate of the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania. Issue: 3. Pansey L., b. Feb. 17, 1878.

I have verified both Dr. W.M. Hammond's wives through census data. I have provisionally linked William M. Hammond to Benoni G. Hammond as his father because of the above information that he was the child of Benoni G. and his second wife. However I have not been able to verify a name or the existence of this "second wife" who would have been his mother.
