Dad passed peacefully at the age of 83, on Thursday, April 10, 2014, after a tireless effort to rehabilitate from heart surgery. He was surrounded by his family and strong in his faith that he was going to his eternal Heavenly home.

He was born in Durango, CO on September 14, 1930, and was raised there with his brothers.

He served four years in the United States Air Force and came out to California with our mother in 1960.

Dad spent the last 50 years in Fresno and was a teacher at Sun Empire School in Kerman, CA for a number of those years. He enjoyed working with people and after a brief stint in the chicken hatchery business, I think he realized working with humans instead of birds was a better fit.

The later years of his life were spent at the First Congregational Church of Fresno as the Pastor's Visitation Assistant brought him the greatest joy. The members of FCCF were truly his family and his daughters are forever grateful for all the love and kindness bestowed upon him. He was an eternal optimist and saw the good in every single person he ever came upon. Sharing God's love and laughter with friends and family meant everything to Dad and we like to imagine he is continuing his "work" as a Heavenly Greeter now.

Walter is survived by his brother, Carl Banks; his four daughters, Lynette Koury and husband Jim, Sue Lupo and husband Chris, Cindy Banks, and Jennifer Greer. He was blessed with eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; and, sadly, lost a grandson this past summer.

A Memorial Service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Fresno "The Big Red Church" on Friday, April 25, 2014, at 2:00 p.m.
