John S David moved to Burlington in 1835 from Kentucky and became an instrumental businessman in the early development of city. He started the first tavern "The Blackhawk", brick maker, pork packing plant, was a leading builder and shop owner.

In 1844, a record flood devastated the towns along the Mississippi River. David traveled north to Muscatine, Iowa and while there, met and married Mary E Meason. The Davids returned to Burlington and started a family.

During the Mexican war of 1846-48, John was a Col in the Iowa Reg that battled the Mexican forces in what is now Texas. Following the War, John and others from Burlington; James B Cameron, David R Remick and Jacob C Leffer and others traveled west to California as '49ers. While on the west coast, John became a shop owner.

By 1851, his first wife and two children had died and in 1853, John married Mary Elizabeth Cameron. John became a leading member of the Burlington community and strove to enhance the town in all ways. His farm on the outskirts of town was one of all of the modern conveniences.

In May 1880, John S David was depressed from falling real estate prices and poor health. While cleaning one of his son's guns, John shot himself below the chin. His remains are intured in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
