Umberto Assenti passed away peacefully at home in his sleep on October 3, 2014. Born July 5, 1925, he grew up in San Benedetto del Tronto, Ascoli Piceno, Italy and survived World War II. Umberto moved to San Diego in 1954 after marrying Adriana Sabatini, the love of his life.

As an Italian immigrant and proud father of a healthy boy, Umberto began working in restaurants and saved everything he could in the hopes of opening his own restaurant. In 1956, he opened the Isle of Capri Italian Restaurant in Point Loma with his partner, Filippo Balistreri. They had a successful business for 23 years and Umberto's family grew.

Umberto is survived by his five children, Roberto, Rosangela, Gilda, Luigi (Carmen) and Iolanda (Anthony), twelve grandchildren, Alessandro, Adriana, Danielle, Mara, Miranda, Domenic, Timothy, Luigi, Massimo, Anthony, Serena and Lorenzo.

The viewing/rosary will be held on Friday, October 10, 2014 from 4-8:00 pm at Merkley Mitchell Mortuary, 3655 Fifth Avenue, San Diego. The funeral mass will be Saturday, October 11, 2014 at 9:00 am at Our Lady of the Rosary church, corner of State and Date, San Diego.

In lieu of flowers, Umberto would have appreciated donations be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in memory of his wife Adriana.
