John Allen was originally from Ireland, immigrating to Canada, then to America with his Canadian bride, Mary Mackin. They initially lived in Wisconsin where he worked as a laborer, as of 1870. They also had two children, Elisabeth, b. in 1864 in Canada, and John P., b. May 1870 in Wisconsin, according to the 1870 Census taken on June 24, 1870. He had died, however, when the 1880 U S Census was taken on June 15, 1880 at La Crosse, La Crosse County, Wisconsin. His son, John P., was also no longer in the home, and it appears he had also died (noted as a deceased child in 1900 census taken by mother) prior to 1880. John's wife, Mary, was now a widow with three living children, Lizzie (Elisabeth), now 15, at home, Richard, age 7, and Nellie, age 5; both Richard and Nellie were born in Wisconsin and attending school. Mary had taken in four boarders, men who worked at the mill. Her daughter, "Lizzie" (Elisabeth Mary), would marry John Bradfield in 1881 and they would move to Washington state. Mary Allen and her two adult children would follow John and Mary Bradfield to Tacoma, Washington where Mary would die in 1904. She was interred at the Old Pioneer Cemetery in Tacoma, Pierce Co., Washington. I have not been able to locate the graves of either John Allen or his son, John P. Allen as of the date of this memorial's creation [July 3rd, 2014].
