Thomas Burkhart was the 5th son and 8th child of 13 children who would be borne of the union of Coriolanus Domarus "Crill" Burkhart (1821-1881) and Caroline Lavinia (Goff) Burkhart (1835-1892). A 1st generation Oregonian, young Thomas was born on March 31st, 1867 on the family's donation land claim near Harrisburg, in Linn County, Oregon. He was one of three children born to Crill and Caroline who would never live to see their 2nd birthdays.
[Thomas shares a grave marker with his sister Linnie who lived just a few days short of 17 months and brother Eugene who lived just 16 days short of six months; both were born after Thomas's death]. Little Thomas lived only until June 6th, 1867, dying at the tender age of 2 months and 6 days. He was their first child to die and it must have devastated both his parents and his four brothers and three sisters. He was laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery in Albany, Linn County, Oregon, the first of five children their parents would have to bury. Crill died in 1881 and Caroline then had to bury three more children as a widow.
The cause of Thomas's death is not known to me at this time (and may never be known to me), but it was just the first of many tragedies his parents would have to face in their lives. It just breaks my heart.

Crill Burkhart and Leander Columbus Burkhart, my great, great grandfather, were brothers.
