Eugene Burkhart, the twelfth child borne of the union of Coriolanus Domaras "Crill" Burkhart (1821-1881) and Caroline Lavinia (Goff) Burkhart (1835-1892). He was born on the family's donation land claim near Harrisburg in Linn County, Oregon. He also had the next to shortest life of any of his siblings, other than Thomas, who lived just under three months (b.1867). Little Eugene was born Mar 19, 1876 and died on Oct 3rd, 1876, living just six months and 15 days. Like most of the other children who died all too soon, I don't know what took young Eugene's life. I do know, however, that Crill and Caroline loved every one of their children and were devastated by each child's loss. I know I continue to use the word "devastated", but, other than broken hearted or deeply saddened, cannot imagine other words to describe the terrible sense of loss felt from loosing a child, not to mention how Crill must have felt, having to deal with the death of five of them. And Caroline (fondly referred to as "Carolean") not only outlived her husband, but had to cope with outliving eight children as well, as three of her beloved children followed their father in death (dying in 1882, 1885 and 1886). Five of their children lived long lives with four of them getting married and one remaining single thruout the remainder of his days. Eugene is buried at Riverside Cemetery in Albany with his parents and brothers and sisters who died early deaths. The children who married are also buried at Riverside Cemetery, but nearby with their spouses. May they all Rest, at Peace, forever.
