Sarah Elizabeth Cable was born in Cedar Falls, Iowa in April, 1853, to Hesekial Guire Cable (1821-1899) and Margaret Cable (1832-1891). When the 1860 Census was taken on Jul 28, 1860, the family had relocated to Aqua Caliente Twp., in San Diego Co., California. According to the Census, their farm was located outside of the Indian village. Hezekiah, age 40, a native of Delaware, was a Farmer with property valued at $1,500 and $800 in cash assets. His wife, Margaret, age 29, was from Kentucky. Their four children had been born according to where they had settled as they kept moving West and were listed as: Edward, age 14, b.Missouri, Sarah, age 8, b.Iowa, Margaret, age 3, b.Texas and William, age 9 months, b.Arizona. They shared their farm with four single men, including 2 stage drivers. The only other census I could find, prior to their deaths, was from 1880. The family had relocated to "Martin's Voting Precinct" [listed as a valid voting location in the Oct 24, 1906 issue of the San Bernardino County Sun, from San Bernardino Co., California]. Sarah's father was listed only as "H.C., age 60, Farmer." Her mother was listed only as "M.E., age 59." There were two sons listed as "W.S., age 19, Laborer" and "H.C., age 18, Laborer". Adjacent to their residence were J.W. Wallen, age 44, b.KY, and a Laborer, his wife, "S" (Sarah Elizabeth), age 28, listed as being born in "Indian". There were four children: George, age 12, b.CA, was a Laborer. B.F., age 8, a son, M., age 6, a daughter, and E., age 4, a daughter, had also been born in California. When she met John Baltzell Burkhart, she was divorced from Mr. John Wallen and had one daughter, Josephine Wallen, b.1882, with her, continuing to live with her mother after she married John Baltzell Burkhart on May 15, 1889 in Los Angeles, California. [When the 1900 Census was taken, she stated she was the mother of 12 children, with seven still living.] This would also include a child born during her 2nd marriage, a son named George Frederick Burkhart who was born in 1890. The family was living in Assembly District 75 of Los Angeles when the US Census was taken in mid 1910 (usually around June or later). At that time, she stated she was the mother of eight children with six still living. In 1914 they were living at 632 W.45th St., Los Angeles, CA. John and Sarah were still living there when he died on Nov 7th, 1914. He was interred at Inglewood Park Cemetery and buried with a Masonic Service. I haven't been able to find anything more about Sarah until the 1920 Census when she was living with a Dr. Newell Brown and his wife, Celia, in Bakersfield, CA. She passed from this life on Mar 27, 1929, in Ocean Park, CA., per the LA Times. She was also buried at Inglewood Park Cemetery, Inglewood, Los Angeles County, CA., but in a different area than her late husband, which one might find of interest as I wonder if she is related to any other persons buried in the immediate vicinity.
I would appreciate any information about the children or about Sarah's life which is so lacking in information.
A Big Thank You to my friend, svh77, for providing me with that always annoying missing link, the death notice that she always finds that helps me piece everything together for my errant southbound relatives.
