Soldier in the War of 1812, 1st generation American and brother of my great, great great grandfather, John Burkhart.

Peter Burkhart was a son of George Peter (Burckhardt) Burkhart, who had been born in Pfungstadt, Germany and emigrated to America aboard the Dutch ship "Sally" with his parents and 3 siblings, arriving at the ship's port of Philadelphia, PA. on Oct 5, 1767. Peter was born of his father's 1st of three marriages, his mother being Anna Margretha (Zimmerman) Burkhart, and the marriage taking place on June 2nd, 1773, in Frederick County, Maryland. Peter was one of eight known children born of the marriage of George Peter and Anna Margretha Burkhart. Peter purchased land in Jefferson County, Sullivan County and Knox County, Tennessee which he used for farming as well as, when his children grew old enough, he shared with his sons the responsibility of farming acreage as well. His last name had been spelled 'Burckhardt' (one of many spellings) and he gave his last name as Burkhart prior to the 1850 U.S.Census taken in Knox County, Tennessee. Peter Burkhart was married twice. He 1st married Rachel Owen (1793-1832) in 1811 in Sullivan County, who bore him eleven children during their 21 years of marriage. He and his brother, John Burkhart (my 3x great grandfather), fought together in the War of 1812. After the war, Peter moved his family to Corryton Community in Knox County, Tennessee in 1820 and remained there until 1832 when the family was living in Emberville, @ 8 m. from Bristol, Sullivan County. In 1850 the U.S. Census of the "Free Inhabitants in the 15th Subdivision, ED Tenn in the County of Knox, State of Tennessee, enumerated..on the 14th day of October, 1850" finds Peter 'Burkheart' and his 2nd wife, Anna (Gillum) 'Burkheart' living in "Knox County, part of, Knox, Tennessee". Peter Burkhart died in Knoxville, Knox County, Apr 10th,1868 at the age of 82, having lived a very long life, with 16 children and at least 25 grandchildren, their spouses and children. I have not been able to locate where he was buried although I have looked via Find A Grave through all of the cemeteries both in Knox County and the entire state of Tennessee.
