Mary Anna Gillam married Peter Burkhart on Aug 14th, 1836 in Knox County, Tennessee. This is known for a fact as their marriage license record has been found, although Peter's name was listed as "Buckhart" due to a clerical error. Their marriage certificate was found listed under the name "Buckland" with a marriage date of Aug 10th, 1836. The only other records are different censuses that have been found for this lady; The one in 1850 has her listed as Ann Burkhart, b.1801, wife of Peter Burkhart, residence Knox, Tennessee. The next census was taken in 1860, having her listed as Mary "Buckhart", born in Tennessee in 1810. She is the wife of Peter and two children still live in the home (listed as a New Dwelling), Monroe, now 20, and Martha, now 17. They both attended school within the past year, and both Peter and his son, Monroe, are Carpenters. The property is valued at $1600 and Peter has $500 cash as of Aug 2d, 1860, when the census was taken. The only other record is the 1880 U.S. Census where she is listed as Annie Burkhart, b.1802, widowed. Her only companion at that time is Annie A. Murphy, age 14, a granddaughter, although I haven't found any Murphys in the family tree during that time, unless this child is from a stepchild of Anna's, or is Martha's child (assuming she married a man named Murphy), an assumption. I have had this information for a very long time now and yet have continued to dig around any different sources I am aware of, attempting to find anything possible regarding Anna Burkhart besides her name, the years she was born & died and the children she bore to my ancestor during their marriage, after his first wife had died. I think it is remiss that her birth date and date of death have not been remembered by any family members, be it her children or grandchildren. Or that these dates weren't written down anywhere, like in a family Bible or in family papers following Peter's death, as he had an estate that had to be settled. She outlived him by 21 years (He died in 1868) and never remarried, but remained a widow. It isn't known where she is buried, although it isn't known where Peter is buried either. I can only hazard to guess that the information is "buried" somewhere in someone's attic. If not, I would greatly appreciate it if any information regarding this woman could be shared with me. She was, after all, the mother of five children between the years of 1837 to 1847, which is no small feat. She was also a stepmother to Peter's younger children from Rachel which I believe are Morgan, who was now age 5 yrs, Harriett & James, who were now age 6, and John Wesley who was now age 10, well maybe. Elizabeth Jane was only 12 years old and, I am sure, she and Priscilla had been performing all of their mother's duties since her death. In many ways I'm sure it was a relief to many of the children that their father was bringing a new wife into the home, yet I'm also sure they were also somewhat hesitant as they had no idea as to what to expect from this woman whom their father had married, besides more siblings. All of the children still living at home were expected to adjust to the new situation and I am certain that there were many difficult times as there are always with blended families, but Annie loved Peter and was his wife so I hope the children grew to love or at least care for their stepmother and that she was worthy of their affection. None the less, she bore Peter five more children as follows:
Thomas Jefferson Burkhart, b.June 9, 1837, Knox Co., Tennessee
Mary Magdalene Burkhart, b.Jan.19, 1839, Knox Co., Tennessee (She d.Dec.18, 1843)
James Monroe Burkhart, b.June 8, 1841, Knox Co., Tennessee
Martha Catherine Burkhart, b.June 20, 1844, Knox County, Tennessee
and
Mary Ann Burkhart, b.Sept.26, 1847, Knox County, Tennessee.
Little Mary only lived 4 years, but the other children lived to adulthood. Thomas and James married and raised families but Martha and Mary Ann chose to remain single, something that was not that uncommon in the mid 1800's and perhaps the War had something to do with it as well. As mentioned previously, Peter died in 1868, leaving Anna a widow. She did not remarry, preferring to remain a widow for the rest of her days. She lived a long life, living until 1889, to the age of about 81 yrs. As with Peter, the location of her burial is unknown, but would probably have been a family graveyard in Knox County. I have looked thru out all of Find A Grave & found nothing, which is why I finally created this memorial for her. It would be really great if she were located some day in some out of the way cemetery in Tennessee. I hope I'm around to hear about it.
****Two variations of her last name during this time were: Gillum and Gilliam for her maiden name and Burkhardt (the original spelling when Peter's family came to America) and Buckhart, Burckhartt, Burchartt, Birkheart and many others for her married name. It, unfortunately, seemed to change depending upon who was writing down their last name. I've found at least seven variations of my family's last name.****

Nov 5, 2012- I have just read some of the bio of Harriett Evaline, one of Rachel's daughters. It states that Peter married Anna Gilliam (not Gillum) on Aug 14, 1836, when Harriett was just 6 yrs. old. It states "His new wife, Anna Gilliam was probably the only mother...Henrietta knew." The biographer knew about Peter Burkhart and was able to give the location of the original homestead in the Knoxville area as being near Millerstown Pike in E.Knox County near the intersection of Babeley and Harris Roads. It was still standing after Peter Burkhart died on Apr 10, 1868. And so Anna's name is being changed again, one more time. Sorry, gt.gt.gt. Uncle Peter and Aunt Anna.

Jan 9th, 2015- Having reviewed records and matches, I've amended her 1st name and nickname. I have also amended her date of birth; am still seeking the child who married into the Murphy family during the mid 1860's.
