Vlad and Marina Butsky drowned while scuba diving together near Whaler's Cove in the Point Lobos State Reserve four miles south of Carmel, Monterey County, California. The diving conditions were good and the Butskys were certified divers; the exact cause of the tragic accident is under investigation.

Both graduates of Poltava State Technical University in the Ukraine, they were married in 1990 and emmigrated together to the United States with their two daughters in 1999. They were living in East San Jose (Santa Clara County, California) at the time of their deaths.

Buried February 28, 2013, Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, 490 Lincoln St. Santa Clara, California.
