This may be the marker of Mary Ann (Wagstaff) Brooks, wife of William Brooks, who owned the land on which this cemetery was located. Mary Ann died between 1861 and 1865.

William Brooks was born Nov 7, 1799 in Yorkshire England. He married Mary Ann Wagstaff at an unknown date in England. He arrived with his wife and seven children in New York City on March 1, 1841 from Liverpool. After several years in Rhode Island, he arrived in 1844 at Alton, Illinois. A land purchase is recorded in Green County in 1849 for 120 acres in Section 28. He passed away in 1868. His will was made on January 14, 1861 and probated December 22, 1868. He was buried, in all likelihood on land he owned on the border of Greene and Jersey county. In 1973 2 tombstones were located on the abandoned site - but his was not there. Probate papers show that his son James ordered a marble stone 4 feet by 1 foot thick.
