John Bauereiss enlisted in Ohio's Co. D. Reg. 8 on April 29, 1861 and was mustered out of service on Aug. 18, 1861.

He married Charity Ann Edwards on April 17, 1866 in Jersey County, IL. His name is spelled Bowereis on that document.

In the 1870 federal census, he is listed as follows in Township 7 Range 10 of Jersey County, IL:

Nancy Ann, 1

Charity Ann died in 1895 and is believed to have been buried in the Van Horne Cemetery.

John was admitted into the Illinois Soldiers' and Sailors' Home in Quincy on June 27, 1899. He requested a 90-day furlough in 1904 to visit his son, Thomas, in Springfield, IL, and passed away a few days later at his son's home.
