Levin Layfield was the son of Josiah & Hettie Layfield. He was married to Lucretia Peacock and they had twelve children.

Levin enlisted for three years with Hillard's Legion (Company F, 3rd Batt.) on June 12, 1862 in Columbus, Georgia. He was at an age that would have been considered old at that time, as he was fifty two and being paid to be a substitute for an S. Rothschild.

According to his military records, Levin was severely wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga on September 20, 1863. He later died of his injuries on October 21, 1863 at Empire House Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.

Levin is buried at historic Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia. The name on his gravestone is listed as L. Lafield and his grave is located on row ten, number nine. I visited this cemetery in 2014 to take a picture of his grave, but it wasn't at the specified location. My brother and I walked the entire section of the six thousand Civil War soldiers buried there and did not find Levin's marker. Afterwards I checked with the office staff and we all agreed he is most likely buried in an unmarked grave. The Sexton wasn't working that day, so l sent him an email, but never received a response. At this point, I still assume he is buried in an unmarked grave. I would like to verify his burial place and have a military gravestone placed on his grave.

An additional note...Levin had three sons who served during the War between the States. George Washington Layfield, William Henry Layfield & John Layfield. George was not injured and returned home after the war. William was shot through the mouth and lived with his injury the rest of his life. John Layfield was injured at the Battle of Seven Pines and died on June 19, 1862 in a hospital in Richmond, Virginia.Company F 3rd Alabama Rgt CSA. He died at Empire House Hospital in Atlanta and was buried on October 21,1863. ADAH lists his first name as Leven.
