Kenneth Joseph Abernathy, 79, of Columbia passed away on Saturday, March 17, 2007, at Truman Memorial Veterans' Hospital.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 23, at Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Kenneth was born on March 19, 1927, in Crystal City to Clarence and Rose Quest Abernathy, and they preceded him in death. On May 7, 1947, he married Marjorie Brueckner in Crystal City, and she also preceded him in death.

Kenneth enjoyed making jewelry and other items from rocks he collected, and he was a member of the Central Missouri Rock and Lapidary Club.

Survivors include his children, Theresa Kimmel and husband Rich of Fort Worth, Texas, Paul Abernathy and wife Pat of Fayette, James Abernathy and wife Tina of Kirksville, Pam Mathews and husband David of Columbia; grandchildren Kelley Kimmel of Fort Worth, Mike Kimmel of Asheville, N.C., Keith Abernathy of Springfield, Jackie Abernathy of Hollister, Jason Abernathy of Boonville, Jacob Abernathy of Kirksville and Christopher Abernathy of Kirksville; and six great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Bob, Louis and Ray Abernathy.
