Alfonso Torregrossa was born in May, 1841 in Sicily to Francesco and Carmela (nee Stella) Torregrossa. He lived in Caltanissetta, in the town of Resuttano, prior to his immigration to the United states in 1893. After the arrival of his wife Benedetta and children, the family opened a macaroni factory and grocery store. In the late 1890s through early 1900s Alfonso and his wife lived on Roosevelt Street in the Fourth Ward of Lower Manhattan.

Alfonso was the father of:

Francesco, 1865-1947
Benedetto, born 1870*
Rosario, born 1873
Joseph, 1882-1964
Angelina, born 1886
Carmela, born 1888
Antonio, 1890-1956

All of Alfonso and Benedetta's children were born in Caltanisetta, Resuttano, Sicily and immigrated to the United States in the late 19th-early 20th centuries.

In addition to providing a home for his younger children Joseph, Angelina, Carmela and Antonio, Alfonso's niece Alfonsa DeVita lived with him circa 1900.

On October 20th, 1910 Alfonso was diagnosed as suffering from Bronco-Pneumonia and Endocarditis Cronica. He was cared for at home by Dr. Giuseppe Di Santis until his passing at 5 a.m. on November 7, 1910. At the time of his death, Alfonso was living at 88 Oliver Street in a tenement within the Fourth Ward.

Funeral arrangements were made through the Establishement of Charles Bacigalupo of Mulberry Street New York followed by burial on November 9, 1910 at Calvary Cemetery.

*The only record I have of a son named Benedetto Torregrossa appears on the Death Certificate for Benedetta Torregrossa. Benedetto is given as the informant of his Mother's death. My notes had mention of a birth year circa 1870 but I cannot find the original source for this. It is possible that the clerk recording the information for Benedetta's death made a mistake as to the name of the informant.
