ARM2 Douglas W. Pierson was an observer/gunner on board of a SOC-3 Seagull observation plane from the USS Philadelphia. The plane was flying over the Mediterranean Sea near Scoglitti (Sicily) in support of operation Husky. The seaplane was shot down by a German Messerschmitt ME-109 and crashed into the surf near Scoglitti. Both crewmembers were killed and buried in the temporary American GELA Cemetery. ARM2 Pierson was buried in grave H-86-1024. After the war his remains were repatriated and buried in the Fairmount Cemetery in Newark, New Jersey.

Over 1,200 men and women were buried in the GELA Cemetery between July 1943 and 1947. I am writing a book about this cemetery and hope to finish it next year (2013).
