Harold Freeman Downie Resident of Alamo, CA

Harold Freeman Downie, treasured and beloved husband, father, and grandfather was born February 23, 1921 and passed away September 12, 2012.

Known to his friends and loved ones as Hal, he leaves behind his daughter Marcia and her husband Harvey Frye; his son Michael Freeman; his granddaughters Genevieve and husband Adam Rozansky and Caroline; his sister Pauline Purnell; his niece Diane Jessee; and his nephew Greg Purnell and partner Claire Murdock.

Though he departs from many who cherish him, he is now reunited Above with his parents, grandparents, and his loving, dedicated wife of 62 years, Iris.

Hal was born to William and Beulah Downie in Spokane, Washington. The challenges and triumphs he experienced growing up as the man of the house with his mother, grandmother Anabel Webb, and sister in the Depression era helped to form the inspiring leader strong of heart and spirit that he became.

After receiving a two-year degree from Multnomah College in Portland, Oregon, Hal joined the Army Air Corps. during World War II with the rank of Lieutenant and was stationed in San Angelo, Texas as a flight instructor. While in the Army, he flew the P47 and P51 aircrafts. Hal retired from the Army after the war with the rank of Captain and finished his college education at Oregon State College (now Oregon State University) under the GI Bill.

Though he seriously considered entering the Methodist ministry, Hal ultimately chose to pursue a lifelong career in engineering.

Hal and Iris married in 1948, shortly after Hal began his career at U.S. Steel, where he would pledge 43 years of service before retiring as a Vice President in 1991. Hal was deeply respected by his colleagues and he revered the U.S. Steel company as his second home.

Hal and Iris were truly blessed to share a life filled with love with the adoption of their two children and the births of their two grandchildren, and with adventure in traveling all over the world.

We as Hal's family would like to thank the staff and residents of the Heritage retirement community in Austin, Texas for their care of our loved one and for their friendship, which gave Hal's last year meaning.

Services will be held in the Sanctuary at the San Ramon Valley United Methodist Church, where Hal and Iris were founding members, on Sunday, October 7 at 1:00 pm.

Any donations may be made, in lieu of flowers, to the Wounded Warrior Project or Alzheimer 's Disease Research.
