Luigia Andreatta was born in Torre del Vicino in a valley surrounded by the alps. There was a famous health spa nearby. Her grandfather (surname Aquasilente) was a supervisor in a mill. Her dad was having a hard time finding work. He heard about South America wanted people to come and settle and there was work to be had. He and his wife decided to go. There were five children and Luigia was the oldest. They took a steamship and it was a very rough trip. Onboard ship Luigia's mother contracted yellow fever, so they were in quarantine at Port Allegro harbor. Her mother died and was buried at sea. Later they were able to go ashore and found a place to live.
Luigia had full responsibility of her three brothers and one sister. She was there a year, and her dad was going to marry, so her grandparents asked if he would send Luigia back to them in Italy. She left and lived with her grandparents. She was around fifteen years of age, so she started working in the mill. She never had to take care of a house and never learned to cook. Her biggest enjoyment was singing. She had a beautiful contralto voice and sang in the church choir and any musical doings in her community. She became quite popular. she went to a dance with her cousin and met Domenico Carollo there. She fell in love with him and they were planning to marry. He was called up in the army to go to war. This happened three times so Domenico decided to come to America. He said after he was settled he would send for her and they would be married. (source - family record of daughter Angelina Auclair)
