Olga Emma Leibold Browning, 88, passed away Friday, Feb. 5, at a local health care facility.
Her death marked the end of an era and a turning of the last page of a chapter of Bandera County history. Olga was one of the last of the old time ranch women. She was born on a ranch, married a ranchman and lived a ranch woman's life.
She was born June 6, 1921 to Eddie and Carrie Barnes Leibold in Bandera County. The Leibold family dates back to the 1880s in Bandera County.
When Olga was born, the county had no electricity and very few families had running water or telephones. Since there were few autos, folks either traveled by horseback or in buggies or walked. Education took place in one-room schoolhouses.
Olga married Ellis Christopher Browning on Oct. 16, 1950, in Bandera. The couple began their life together on the ranch of Olga's Grandmother Barnes, located just south of Bandera.
In the 1950s, the couple had two sons, Edwin Ellis and Bodie Joseph. Olga's husband, her children and the ranch became her life. She was a dedicated wife and mother, who devoted her life to raising her sons.
A hard worker who enjoyed gardening, Olga was also a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include Edwin Ellis Browning and his wife, Vicki; Bodie Joseph Browning; grandson Edwin Ellis Browning Jr. and his wife, Dorothy; sister Ruth Andres; granddaughter Kari Browning; and great-grandson William Henry Browning.
Olga was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis Christopher Browning, and brother Dewitt Leibold.
Memorial services were held Monday, Feb. 8, at Grimes Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Martin Smith officiating. Chaplain William Bowie spoke and Gary Johnston delivered the eulogy. Interment followed in the Barnes' family plot at Bandera Cemetery.
Pallbearers included Billy Walker, Gary Johnston, John Bruce, Clyde Kimbro, John Hamilton and George Hamilton.
Memorials may be offered to a charity of choice.
