Twenty-first century society leader and well-known croquet player. Wife of Walter S. Gubelmann (1908-1988), president and director of Realty and Industrial Corporation in Palm Beach, Florida. Inductee of the Croquet Hall of Fame. Considered by many to be Palm Beach's most 'active' socialite, she was long regarded with the title of "queen of the elite"; her parties and dinners being amongst the most desired of, setting the standard for such luxuries today. At her "small house" on South Ocean Boulevard in Palm Beach, Florida, she entertained the finest of socialites with her annual Red Cross Showcase gala; held on the grounds of her estate ~ with guests donning red and white. At 'Starboard House', her summer 'cottage' in Newport, Rhode Island, she and her husband became known for their popular fundraising dinner; most notably for the Republican party; with dinner invitations sometimes costing up to $1,000 a head! At their country home 'Southerly' in Centre Island, New York, they hosted various croquet events and dinners, most notably their "Sticky Wickets" tournament. Held between friends, the estate was a prime location, as the home could be recognized from the ocean by the appearance of the stern of a full-sized Spanish galleon planted against the cliffside, which was, in fact, their pool house. Affectionately known as "Glamma", she held a life-long love of the ocean. A passionate shell-collector ~ her treasures which she displayed proudly in her home ~ she and her husband were well-known sailing competitors, together successfully defending the America's Cup in 1964 with their boat 'Constellation'. Outspokenly witty and humorous, she served as president of the Croquet Foundation of America. Passionate about croquet, she was a well-known player in Palm Beach croquet circles, eventually being inducted into the Croquet Hall of Fame in 1972. Long considered to be one of the wealthiest ladies in Palm Beach, she was estimated to be worth around one hundred million dollars, something she herself didn't even known. Her sophisticated elegance, combined with her earthy humor, great natural warmth and unending generosity have endeared her to people throughout society, and especially to those in croquet circles; something which she will long be remembered for.
