Asa Wilson Phillips, who was born in Pickaway County, Ohio, Oct. 28, 1838, and when a child of nine years old, with his parents came to Lee County, Iowa. He was the fifth of six known children born to Wilson Phillips 1801 and Mary Black 1799. Their children are: Hannah, Peter, Sarah or Sally, Jane, Asa and Mary Ellen. Wilson and Mary were the actual pioneers to Iowa, traveling by covered wagon from Ohio to the newly opened Iowa Territory ca. 1847.

On 14 June 1860, in Clark County, Missouri, he married Samantha Dorman, daughter of Joshua and Eleanor/Ellen (Driskill) Dorman, third of 9 known children born to that union.

Asa and Samantha settled on a homestead of 40 acres in what is currently known as the Shimek State Forest. He was a farmer. Asa and Samantha were Methodists. He served in the Civil War, Ohio, Company H, 18th Regiment, Ohio Infantry (New).

In his later years, after the death of his wife, Samantha in 1897, Asa lived with his son, Walt. On October 9, 1916, Asa passed away as his home from chronic nephritis. He is buried with his wife Samantha in the Croton Cemetery, Van Buren Twp., Lee, Iowa.
