Sherri was a 1976 graduate of Leeds High School in Leeds, Alabama, where she was in the band and feature twirler on the majorette squad. She was a 1980 graduate of the University of Texas at Dallas with a degree in Special Education.
Sherri and David were married July 1, 1978 in Chelsea, AL, and were blessed by God with four wonderful children and four grandchildren. A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, she was always giving herself unselfishly to her family’s needs.
In her first three years of married life, Sherri worked in the youth ministry at Prestonwood Baptist Church where her husband was the Student Pastor. Between 1982 and 1998 at Audelia Road Baptist Church in Dallas, TX, and 1999-2005 at MacArthur Blvd. Baptist Church in Irving, TX, Sherri filled many roles of ministry alongside her pastor husband, including teaching the senior adult ladies Sunday School class, singing in the choir, and working in the Ladies Ministry. She continued to serve in her local church when her husband became Dean of the School of Theology at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
When her children were in elementary school, Sherri worked as a Teacher’s Assistant at Buckingham North Christian School in Garland, TX, and then later as a 2nd Grade teacher and 11th grade teacher at Canyon Creek Christian Academy in Richardson, TX.
In 2004, Sherri became the Volunteer Coordinator for the USO at DFW Airport, ministering to America’s military men and their families. During this time, she worked for “United Through Reading,” a program where servicemen and women being deployed overseas are videoed reading a storybook to their children. She “retired” in 2008 to take on a new role: grandmother, a role she ably served as “Amma” until her home going.
Sherri was a people person. Her spiritual gifts were mercy and service. Often she would assist total strangers, especially the elderly, in special ways. Sometimes she would pay for food for the people behind her in line at a fast food restaurant. Always quick with a kind word; always sensitive to the needs of others; Sherri lived out her love for Christ by loving other people.
Sherri demonstrated courage, tenacity, and spiritual depth during the last four years of her life as she battled cancer. Her email and Facebook “updates” to her “prayer warriors” exhibited an incredible testimony of how Christians face suffering triumphantly through Jesus Christ, and thousands have been blessed and encouraged by the heartfelt and straight forward chronicle of her journey.
Her struggle is now over. Her victory is won . . . because we are always more than conquerors through Christ who loved us and gave Himself for us.
