Mrs. Fern Wathen
Mrs. Fern M. Wathen, 79, 1310 E. 10th, died Tuesday at a Bentonville, Ark., hospital after becoming ill while visiting a brother in Bentonville.
She was born May 18, 1893, at Ottumwa, Iowa, and moved to Jewell County, Kan., at the age of 6. She moved to Topeka at age 26. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and had formerly worked in the retail grocery business.
Her husband, Thomas H. Wathen, died May 15, 1955.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Hollingshead, Marysville, Calif.; one son, Thomas C. Wathen, 3310 E. 10th; two brothers, R. v. McMaster, Wheat Ridge, Colo., and Ronald M. McMaster, Bentonville, Ark.; 10 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wall-Diffenderfer Mortuary, Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
(Note: There are a number of errors in this obituary. Fern did not move to Jewell County, Kansas at the age of 6. She moved there when her son, Thomas Clinton, was a toddler. She did not move to Topeka, Kansas at the age of 26. She moved there with her husband in the 1940's. Another error is her daughters name. This obituary states her name as Dorothy, but it was actually Dortha.)
