I, J. Wathen, manager of this memorial, am the 3rd great-granddaughter of James. His daughter, Margaret Alice (Stewart) McMaster, is my 2nd great-grandmother.

**********

James Stewart was born 29 February, 1844, in Paisley, Scotland. At this point I do not know who his parents were or when James came to America. I do know that on 12 August, 1862, at the age of 19, he enlisted at Time, Illinois, into the Union Army. He served in Company E - later in Company D - 99th Regiment, Illinois Volunteers. James was mustered out of the Army on the 31 July, 1865, in Baton Rogue, Louisiana. On 18 October, 1866, he married Amanda Gilmer (known as Mianda), daughter of William Squire and Barbara (Daugherty) Gilmer, in Jefferson County, Iowa. James and Mianda had six children: Mary, Martha, Margaret, Catherine, Ida and James. On 3 April, 1881, before his only son had been born, James died of hemorrhage of stomach and bowels. His death certificate shows that he was buried in Walnut Hill Cemetery.
