Melinda Relief Burt's biological father, George D Burt, died in the Civil War when she was 1 year old, & her mother, Sarah Leonard Bryant Burt, widowed, died in Oct 1872. Orphaned, 9-yr-old Melinda was apparently adopted by Edward A Emmons and given a new name, Miss Nellie Jane Emmons. His name appears on Nellie's documents as her father & her maiden name is listed most often as Emmons (did find Burt on daughter Grace's birth record).
