Sea Captain and Master Mariner
Captain J. W. Aspe commanded many of the large square-riggers, including, at the time of his death, one of the two largest, the "Flying Cloud" II (formerly the ex-German bark "Ottawa.") The "Flying Cloud" II was wrecked on the Japanese coast about four months after Captain Aspe's death. He died of smallpox in June 1918 at a foreign port.

4. During WWI, a trial, in which Captain Aspe was serving as a juror, was halted when the government needed the captain to command a ship.
"To Serve Patriotism- Los Angeles, July 26, 1917- Even the prime precedence of the courts and speedy dispatch of justice were set aside today the better to serve patriotism when the trial of John W. O'Day and Charles Berry, accused of fraud, was halted to permit Captain J. W. Aspe, master mariner, to answer the call of the federal shipping board. Aspe was a juror in the case and will report to San Francisco to assume charge of a government steamer." (Berkeley Daily Gazette, Berkeley, California, July 26, 1917. page 7)

5. The two largest sailing vessels in trade now-adays happen to be on the way to San Francisco and may arrive about the same day, giving old-timers a chance to spin yarns of the old days when windjammers far outnumbered
the steam craft loading and discharging at the wharves along the water front. The "Aloshulu," Captain Lancaster, squared away from Melbourne a few days ago with a cargo of wheat, and the "Flying Cloud," Captain Aspe, got under way from Manila about the same time. 6. Marine Mishaps- According to private advices received at San Francisco the bark Flying Cloud, en route from Manila for a Pacific port, has been wrecked on the Japanese coast. No details of the disaster have been received.
