Escondido Royal Akin passed away at his beloved home overlooking Lake Hodges on January 31, 2016. He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Dr. Perla Gil Akin, in 2013. Royal was born in Waterloo, Iowa, and came to Burbank, California with his family in the early 1930's.After getting a start in scientific and technical work in the Los Angeles area, he moved to San Diego County as a young man and worked at Scripps Institute of Oceanography and the Naval Electronics Laboratory as an electro-optical engineer. He developed instruments that went to the moon on the Lunar Rover, and to the deep Sea in the Trieste Bathyscaph. In 1961, he co-founded Gamma Scientific, Inc., a local electronic instrument company that specialized in developing and building photometric devices, and he held patents on a number of scientific devices. He and his partner, the late Harold Field, sold the company and he retired in 1981.
