Thomas Cathcart Archer was born at Invermay on 30 Nov 1862, the eldest of seven children of Thomas Chalmers Archer JP (1840-1890) and his wife Louisa Kate Cathcart (1840-1908) of 'Woolmers', Longford. He was the grandson of Thomas William Archer (1817-1844). Thomas was educated at the Launceston Church Grammar School and was employed in the office of Douglas and Collins, solicitors. On the death of his father on 4 Mar 1890, Thomas became the owner of the 12,000 acre estate of 'Woolmers'. He placed it in the hands of tenants and continued to live in Launceston, although he was involved in the Longford community.

Thomas junior married Eleanor Mary Harrop on 7 Oct 1890. Their only child, Thomas Edward Cathcart, was born on 24 Nov 1892 and died in 1975. Thomas was a champion golfer, a noted cricketer and enthusiastic yachtsman. He was the commodore and patron of the Tamar Yacht Club and a boat owner for more than 50 years. He was a justice of the peace and a councillor with the Longford Council for over 33 years. He was a member of the Longford Show Society from 1902. Thomas Cathcart Archer died aged 71 on 11 Aug 1934 in Melbourne at a private hospital where he had gone for medical treatment and was buried at Christ Church, Longford. His wife Eleanor had died the previous year.
