Bernhard (Berny) Frederick Gaarsoe
Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Bernhard Gaarsoe, passed away while surrounded by his loving family, Thursday, March 11, 1999, of complications from a stroke.
Born April 18, 1919 in Chicago, Illinois, to Leo Henry John and Jeannette Thorbrogger Gaarsoe. Married his life-long partner, Phyllis-Jean Newman, December 3, 1942 in Great Falls, Montana.
In his youth, Berny lived in and around Chicago and for a short time in Copenhagen, Denmark. He graduated from Glenbard High School in Roselle, Illinois. Berny served for 4 years in the Army Air Corps during World War II, where he achieved the rank of Master Sergeant. Among the locations he was stationed were Alaska, Montana and Salt Lake City, where he met his wife, Phyllis. After leaving the military, Berny worked in the printing industry for the rest of his career including as president of ABL Publishing in Chicago and, after moving to Salt Lake in 1954, for Twin Typographers, from which he retired in 1984.
Although in 1954 Berny was afflicted with polio with permanent paralysis to one arm, he never let it keep him from enjoying many good times with family and friends. Among his hobbies he most loved the game of golf, from the times in his teens in Chicago when he caddied for a number of pros. After he retired he golfed with many friends. Berny also treasured the time he spent with his 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Berny was known by everyone for his quick wit and great sense of humor. He will be dearly missed by many.
Berny is survived by his wife, Phyllis, children, Berny Gaarsoe (Marj), Karen Turner (Fred), Greg Gaarsoe (Karen), and Kris Wilkins; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, brother, Wallace and granddaughter, Alice.
A memorial service for close friends and family will be held Monday, March 15, at 12 noon at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East south Temple. Friends may call 11-11:45 a.m. prior to the services. Interment, Mount Olivet Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the Make A Wish Foundation.
