Marie Tallent Barry was the daughter of Thomas F. Tallent, Sr. and Mary E. Harvey Tallent. Mary was the sister of my paternal great-grandfather, John Daniel Harvey.

Marie was the youngest of Thomas and Mary's eight children. Her siblings were John, Thomas, William, Edward, Francis, and Leo. Her eldest brother, George H., died at the age of 13 months.

She married John Barry at Our Mother of Sorrows Church.

On January 30, 1954, the Barrys' home at 4741 Lancaster Avenue (directly across from Our Mother of Sorrows) was hit by a terrible fire. The first alarm sounded at 4:40 a.m.

Marie, John (who worked at Link Belt Co., then located at 2045 West Hunting Park Avenue in Philadelphia)), and four of their five children were killed. The children who died were Marie, 17, a senior at West Catholic Girls' High School; Leo, 11, a sixth-grader at Our Mother of Sorrows School; Patrick, 6, a first-grader at OMOS; and Marjorie, the baby of the family, who was only four years old.

Although severely burned, there was hope that young Patrick would recover, but he died the evening of the fire, January 30. Marie's husband, John, was the last to die, succumbing from his injuries on February 2.

The only member of the family to escape the fire was 19-year-old John, Jr., who was at work at Linton's Restaurant at 52nd Street and Baltimore Avenue.
