Born to Shakir & Faiza Jalil, he contracted polio as a toddler, which greatly weakened his left leg. He endured numerous surgeries on that leg, and used a leg brace for the remainder of his life. He came to the U.S. in 1979 and resided in Commack, NY. He attended high school in Commack where one of his classmates was Rosie O'Donnell. He left school in 1981 to return to Baghdad, only to return a few months later. He relocated to Storrs, CT in January 1982 where he resumed his high school studies, graduating from E.O. Smith High School in June 1983. He went to work in NYC for a few years, returning to CT in 1986. He married in 1987 and divorced a few years later. He remained on good terms with his ex-wife. During his married years, he went to school for HVAC, where he graduated with honors. He returned to NYC in the early 1990's, remaining there until 2003. He returned to Baghdad and worked for the U.S. Army at Saddam Hussein's old palace in the green zone. When things became dangerous for him, Gus moved with his family to Jordan. He stayed there for a couple of years before moving to Malaysia in 2006. There, he took up flying model planes.
