My paternal grandfather; born & raised in Liverpool, England, he learned to play the french horn & became a musician in the British Navy. He immigrated to the U.S. where he settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War I, serving as a Chief Commissary Steward. He married Mildred Emerson in 1918, and they had 4 children: Herbert, Charles, John, & Katherine. They lived on 10 Cedar Street in Hingham, Massachusetts. Herbert Kearns ran the Broad Cove Ballroom & Inn during the 1920's. He later ran a lunchonette & bakery, all in Hingham. He also worked for John Hancock Insurance in Boston. He had a great singing voice, where he performed in Gilbert & Sullivan operettas and on radio during the 1920's. He was offered a recording deal, but chose not to accept it. In his later years, he sang in the choir at the Second Parish Church of Hingham & served as the Veterans Agent for the Town of Hingham. He had his own catering business until his illness.
