The Reverend Maxwell joined the Methodist Church at age fifteen, was ordained deacon in 1913, and elder two years later. He married Josephine Abraham on 15 June 1897; the union produced two daughters, Bonnie Lee and Karin. Maxwell served pastoral charges in Menard, Eldorado, Sonora, Ganado, South Side (San Antonio), Center Point, Ozona, and Poteet-Charlotte, Texas successively. At his untimely death from a ruptured appendix, he was serving the Poteet and Charlotte charge in the San Antonio district. His obituary relates that, "He loved to stand before the people and preach the gospel. In his last hours he told of Divine Love. The people were deeply attached to him." Maxwell died in the Kerrville Hospital.
