Benjamin A. Chavez, 81, passed away peacefully at home after a courageous battle with cancer (18,March,2007) in Newport Beach, CA
Born March 31, 1926 in Boyle Heights LA. He was the pride of Boyle Heights neighborhood; St Mary’s elementary 1940, Mount Carmel high school 1944, where he lettered in track & field, San Jose State 1947 (track scholarship). He raised his family in Temple City, CA. Then he moved to Newport Beach in 1972. He was a WWII US Navy veteran (USS Witchita, CA45, the first to land in Nagasaki). He was a retired audio engineer, a member of the union IATSE Local #33 and worked at the studios and theaters for 37 years. In retirement Ben enjoyed boating, golf, traveling and visiting friends. He also enjoyed his friends and dancing as a member of the American Legion Post,Newport Beach. He was a devoted member of Our Lady of Mt Carmel.
Ben was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Eleanor: five children and their spouses, Christine, Richard, Timothy, Loretta Lewis and Michael: 7 grandchildren, Louise Nigro, Michelle Kahl, Portia Nigro, Cody Chavez, Lauren Chavez, Michael Lewis and Isabella Chavez and 7 great grandchildren and his loving dog Jack. He also survived by his Brother Michael Chavez and loving sister Eva Koehl, and many nieces and nephews of his deceased brothers Al, Joseph, and Moses.
Ben, will be remembered for his love of life, sense of humor, his devotion to his family and his generous and kind heart.
The funeral mass and service will be held at (03/24 Saturday, 10am) at Our Lady Of Mt Carmel church in Newport beach. Burial will follow at Pacific View Cemetary in Newport Beach, CA
