Elected Constable of L.A. County in 1885 and Sheriff of L.A. County in 1887. He served as sheriff from 1889-1890. He served as warden of San Quentin Prison from 1899-1903, and then went to El Salvador to supervise the building of a prison there. He then returned to Los Angeles where he served as a regular deputy for many years.
