The director of a silver mining company operating near Monte Carlo, Mexico, Barber was kidpapped on December 15, 1927, by Mexican rebels. They demanded a ransom of 15,000 pesos for Barber and his servant, Pedro. They were paid but the captors did not release him. One night around the campfire, Barber got his captives drunk with cognac that he had smuggled to him. They passed out and him and Pedro tied up the rebels and killed four of them. They took horses with them and rode to a nearby town.

Barber went on to have a successful life as a geologist and scientist. He died in a nursing home in Tujunga, CA.
