O.E. Barney was an officer with Los Angeles Police Department who had recently been reinstated after resigning for health reasons. He was helping to fight a fire in the newly annexed Sawtelle area near the Soldiers Home when he was overcome by flames and burnt to death. The area at the time was called "Westgate", and the Soldiers Home is now the V.A. Hospital.
