Acuna, a police officer with the Montebello Police Department, was on duty when he responded to a call of an armed robbery in progress at 2321 W. Beverly Blvd.The suspect exited, using an elderly woman as a shield. Acuna withheld firing, at which time the suspect shot and killed him. Earlier in the evening, Acuna told his friend, Officer Jaime Carranza, "Why does anyone become a cop? That's the way people are. It takes a certain breed. I'll always be a cop."
Acuna left a wife and three children.
