Murder Victim. Barnwell was a Glendale resident who was terrified of the Hillside Stranglers that were very active at the time in the area. Two of the victims of the Stranglers had lived nearby. Her husband gave her a .25 caliber pistol for protection, and one night near Glendale Community Hospital at 1100 Windsor Rd, she was attacked by Richard Reynolds, a La Crescenta machine shop owner. Both Barnwell and Reynolds opened fire on one another, killing them both.

Barnwell had been shot twice in the chest. Reynolds was shot once in the head and five times in the chest.

Reynolds had a long history of criminal activity, and had recently served time for sex crimes against women.

For several weeks, media reports and the public believed that Roxanne had caught and killed the Hillside Strangler, but later it was proven that the case of her attack and the serial killings were unrelated.
